Most people enjoy an appreciate story—especially a love affair. We may believe ourselves above a juicy scandal…, but that we joking? Tragically, but for several highly successful people regarding the past—from Oscar Wilde to Alan Turing to loss Hunter—affairs couldn’t just ending work and reputations, they might finish lives. People that would much instead not have to keep hidden their unique fancy being forced to do so by firm personal propriety, religious moralism, and repressive legislation.
In other popular situation, however—like that of Virginia Woolf along with her friend and fan Vita Sackville-West—an affair doesn’t end up in catastrophe but simply in a cooling of interests into a lovely, enduring friendship.
While prudish outsiders might have been scandalized, neither Woolf’s nor Sackville-West’s husband receive the connection shocking.
